Everyone Loves Algonquin Park.
But what if you want to take a break from the hikes and the paddling? What if your Inner Explorer wants to spend time with your Inner Browser? Then allow me to suggest a visit to Maynooth, Ontario.
Maynooth is a hamlet at the intersection of Hwy. 127 and Hwy. 62, just 25 minutes south of here.
Like so many small Ontario villages, the business heyday was around the turn of the Last century, but Maynooth is being reborn as a hub of creativity. You can work your way down the main street and find everything from original art to collectibles to antiques.
Start with The Potter's Studio & Gallery where Karen Gray makes the egg cups we use each morning, and our own Hay Lake Pottery. Move next door to the 17 rooms of the Madawaska Art Shop and then cross the street for coffee and a genuine Algonquin Gourmet Butter Tart. If you want a truly delicious, healthy lunch pop into the SunRun Cafe.
Check out Foxfire Gallery,Gifts & Antiques for everything from old hat pins to furniture. And all this is just a taste - the Maynooth General Store goes back a hundred years and the store is not only a piece of living history, it has everything from toothpaste to sweaters. It's not just the stores either - the back roads around Maynooth have incredible views, there are hidden gems like Hillsview Farm & Studios and the people you meet are glad to share their treasures. Show us your purchases when you get back to the lodge - for sure they will be unique!
